MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team totaled two All-MIAA medals, broke three school records and hit nine provisional performances on day two of the 2022 MIAA Indoor Championships Saturday. The Tigers sit in sixth as a team through six events with 23 points.
The day began with the culmination of the heptathlon, where Nolan Churchman broke his own record by 129 points with a seven-event total of 5,433, placing second and earning All-MIAA honors. His top event of the day was the 1,000m run, where he was second in the field with a time of 2:44.98 (819 points), allowing him to pass a Pittsburg State competitor by a narrow 21 points. Jack Pakkebier gave the Tigers a total of 12 team points in the multi-event by placing sixth with a personal-best 4,972 points. He was the fastest in the field in the 1,000m run, running in 2:42.34 (848 points) and also passing a competitor on the final event of the day.
The distance crew capped off the day by totaling nine team points in two event finals. Robbie Schmidt broke the 5,000m school record, formerly held by Tiger great Cory Keehn, by nearly five seconds after placing sixth with a time of 14:19.69. The distance medley relay team of Aaron Mangan, Hayden Albright, Ethan Lang and Grant Bradley followed with a combined time of 9:57.92, good for third place and All-MIAA status. Both times were NCAA DII provisional qualifiers.
In between, the Tigers had six runners move on to track finals on Sunday. Philip Landrum will compete in both the 60m and the 200m dash finals after serving as the fifth-fastest in both prelims, running the 60m in 6.84 and the 200m in 21.59. Hayden Albright will run in the 400m dash finals after posting a personal-best 48.19 in the prelims, good for sixth.
The men will also have three entries in mid-distance finals Sunday, including Ethan Lang in the 600y run and Aaron Mangan and Trever Medina in the 800m race. Lang broke his own school record in the prelims, leading the pack in 1:10.29, nearly a full second ahead of second place. Mangan (1:52.52) was second in his heat to sit fifth on the start list for the finals, while Trever Medina (1:51.92) advanced in the seven spot as the fastest time not in the top two of a heat. Both 800m times were provisional marks.
The Tigers picked up a pair of team points from Dayton Williams and Xavier Robinson in the high jump and long jump, respectively. Williams cleared the 6-5.5 bar to finish eighth, while Robinson was eighth in the horizontal leap with a top mark of 23-2.5.
The Tigers will wrap up competition at the league meet Sunday (Feb. 27) beginning at noon in the field events and at 1:30 p.m. on the track.
