🤼‍♀️ Cadden wins, 12 FHSU women place at York Open

YORK, Neb. – Fort Hays State Women's Wrestling returned to action on Saturday (Jan. 18) at the York University Open. Piper Cadden claimed a tournament title at 131 in her first action this season after missing the first semester. Twelve of the 19 Tigers competing in the tournament placed, which included five second-place, two third-place, and four fourth-place finishers to go with Cadden's title.

Cadden blazed her way to the title at 131 by going 3-0 on the day. She did not surrender a point, winning her first match 10-0 by tech fall, advanced in the semifinal with a default win, and then topped teammate Jamie Laswell in the final with a 3-0 decision.

The five second-place finishers for FHSU included the aforementioned Laswell, Ashlynn Goodwin (138), Alexis Burton (145), Josie Houk (160), and Grace Johns (207). Burton was the only other Tiger to record three wins on the day aside from Cadden, going 3-1 in her class. Her loss in the final was to the No. 6 ranked wrestler at 145 in the NAIA.

Laswell, Goodwin, Houk, and Johns all went 2-1 on the day. Laswell knocked off the No. 6 ranked wrestler in NAIA in her opening match on criteria, then scored a tech fall before the loss to Cadden. Goodwin's two wins were over a pair of NAIA ranked wrestlers (No. 15 and 13). Houk scored a fall and then a decision over teammate Kaylee Ricketts before dropping the final to the No. 11 ranked wrestler in NAIA. Johns scored a fall and then a shutout decision over the No. 20 ranked wrestler in the NAIA before a loss in the final.

Isabell Ortiz (117) and Isabella Renfro (180) both went 2-1 on the day to claim third place of their respective classes. Both wrestlers bounced back from losses in their opening matches to win two straight and claim the consolation side of their brackets. Renfro's loss was to the No. 2 ranked wrestler at 207 in the NAIA.

Hannah Selle (103), Gabby Hampton (117), Amanda Jaeger (138), and Hailey Conley (207) all placed fourth in their respective classes. Jaeger was the only wrestler of the four to record two wins on the day, while the others all picked up one.

Next on the schedule for FHSU is a dual with University of Sioux Falls on January 29 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Three days later they will be at the Grand View Open in Des Moines, Iowa.
