HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys and girls basketball teams dropped a home doubleheader Friday night against the Central Plains Oilers at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.
Central Plains 41, TMP 34
The Central Plains girls used a 6-0 second half run to rally from down three and beat the TMP girls 41-34.
Central Plains (3-2) opened the game on a 5-0 before Teagan Gottschalk connected on her first three pointer of the season with just under three minutes left in first quarter for a 5-3 Oilers lead.
Neither team was able to score for the rest of first quarter.
In the second quarter Brynn Rebel knocked down her first career three pointer putting TMP up 6-5 but the lead was short-lived as Central Plains answered back for a 7-6 lead. The Oilers were eventually able to double up TMP for a 12-6 lead.
Gracyn Schippers scored five straight points pulling the Monarchs (3-3) back within one at 12-11 and then Brooke Koenigsman tied the game at 15 on a three pointer, but it was Central Plains who went to the halftime break up 18-15.
Gottschalk and Shyanne Yost combined to score the first six points of the second half giving TMP their largest lead of the game at 21-18 but Central Plains used a 6-2 run to retake the lead at 24-21 and the Oilers never trailed again.
TMP trailed by six early in the fourth quarter and trimmed the deficit to one late in the fourth but Central Plains converted enough free throws down the stretch for the 41-34 victory.
Gracyn Schippers was the only Monarch to score in double figures with 10 points.
Boys: Central Plains 45, TMP 28
The Central Plains boys used a 12-0 first half run to build a double-digit lead and never trailed the rest of the way as the Oilers beat the Monarchs 45-28 Friday.
TMP’s Logan Baalman opened the game with a field goal putting TMP up 2-0 only to see Central Plains (4-1) answer with a 7-0 run taking a 7-2 lead.
Central Plains was able to maintain at least a two-point lead throughout the entire first quarter and they led by four at 11-7 after the first quarter.
After Ian Nehls closed the gap back to two points at 11-9, Central Plains went on a 12-0 run to build a 23-9 lead.
TMP (1-5) was down 10 at halftime at 25-15.
The Monarchs were held scoreless in the third quarter and they were outscored 8-0 in the third quarter and trailed 33-15.
Central Plains went on to the 45-28 victory.
Caden Dinkel scored a team-high eight points.
The Monarchs will host Hoxie on Tuesday.
