Joyce D. Dechant, 65, Hays, died Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at Diversicare of Larned.
She was born May 8, 1956, in Hays, the daughter of Alfred W. “Fritz” and Dorothy (Honas) Dechant. Joyce was a 1974 graduate of Marian High School and she received an Associate Degree in Data Processing in 1985 and a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies in 2011, both from Fort Hays State University. She was a licensed cosmetologist and worked as an administrative specialist in the Nursing Department at Fort Hays State University for over 23 years. She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, the pinochle club, enjoyed flower gardening and the outdoors, and was a lifelong learner. Joyce cherished her family and friends and was a devoted daughter, thoughtful sister, caring aunt, and loyal friend.
Survivors include her mother: Dorothy Dechant of Hays, a brother: Kenneth Dechant and wife Judy of Salina, three sisters: Linda Rohr and husband Allen of Hays, Janice Prater of Hays, and Mary Beth Dreiling and husband Bruce of Hays, five nephews, five nieces, seven great nephews, seven great nieces, two great-great nephews, and two great-great nieces.
She was preceded in death by her father and a nephew: Wade Dreiling.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Monday, February 7, 2022, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, with Fr. Damian Richards officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A combined vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.
