馃弨 Hays basketball sweeps Great Bend in WAC play

Hays played the middle of three consecutive Western Athletic Conference games by hosting Great Bend on Tuesday night.

Five lead changes and four ties resulted in a 22-20 lead for Hays over Great Bend by halftime. The Panthers used a 8-2 run for their biggest of the first half. Hays used the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second to take their largest lead at 13-8 following a 11-2 run.

Highlights

Hays led all but forty seconds of the second half and clung to a 28-27 lead with less than three minutes left in the third quarter. Katie Linenberger hit back to back field goals to ignite a second 11-2 run in the game. This one lasted into the fourth quarter when Aleyia Ruder capped the run with a jumper at 39-29. 

The Hays lead never dropped below eight points over the final five minutes for a 47-33 victory.

Molly Martin led all scorers with 11. Seven different players scored on the best night of shooting for the Indians on the season.

Hays improves to 4-4 on the year and is now 1-2 in WAC play. Great Bend drops to 2-6 and 0-2.

Great Bend 31 - #8 Hays 58

Great Bend scored the first eight points of the game, while it took Hays over five minutes to score their first points. Carson Kieffer converted a traditional three point play with 2:55 left in the first quarter. He turned that into his own 8-0 run to tie the game fifty seconds later.

The Indians turned that 8-0 spurt into a 19-2 run that lasted into the second quarter at 19-10. The game was never closer than six points rest of the way.

Highlights

Hays took their first double digit lead at 25-15 in the final twenty seconds of the first half and led by at least ten for rest of the game. The Indians defense held Great Bend to single digit scoring in the first three quarter and allowed just ten in the fourth for a 58-31 victory.

Jace Linenberger led all scoring with 19 points. Carson kieffer added a season high 18.

#8 Hays improves to 7-1 on the year and is 3-0 in conference play. Great Bend falls to 3-5 and 1-1.

The Indians are on the road Friday to play Garden City.
