RUSSELL  — The Big Creek 4-H Club of Midway District/Russell County has been up to some exciting activities!

Kicking off the year was the Favorite Foods Show where the 4-H youth make their favorite dish and go head-to-head to see what kid has the best food and table setting.

In February, Big Creek had a club lock-in where they worked on wood-burning, pointillism artwork, indoor camping, and games. Also a big event was when they joined the rest of Midway Russell and Ellsworth District for 4-H Day where members and groups compete in public speaking, music, and other various talents.

In March, one event that was really fun was the 4-H Day with the Cats. 4-H kids from all of Kansas got to go to a K-State basketball game!

Later in March, Big Creek took projects to share and sang songs with the residents at Main St. Manor Nursing Home in Russell.

One of many statewide events that took place this spring was the Ag Tech Day near Moundridge, where Big Creek members learned about the newest technology being used in Kansas agriculture. The giant drones, insects, and crop rovers were fascinating.

Last weekend was the Jr. Leaders Showmanship Clinic at the Russell Fairgrounds. Here, 4-H kids learn how to be better at showing animals at the fair.

At the monthly meetings, the club members solve hard problems such as building a club budget, planning service projects, and finding fun, helpful activities for the club to do. The meetings also include talks by members, learning proper meeting procedures, and lively recreational activities like Tug-of-War, the Human Knot and nature scavenger hunts!

4-H offers stuff to do for all different ages like the little kids, too. They are called Cloverbuds and do activities at the meeting like start plants, crafts, read books, and learn what projects they can take. The older kids get to make the decisions.

Members have tons of fun camps, trips, and project work planned for this summer. You can see some of their work at the Russell County Free Fair in late July!

Check back this summer to learn more about what Big Creek 4-H Club is up to.
