Senior Eagles go 3-0 on first day of WWF Tournament

HAYS – A blowout, a walk-off win and a one-hitter highlighted day one of the Wild West Fest Tournament for the Hays Senior Eagles at Larks Park.

After an 18-0 blowout win over the second of two Smith Center teams in the field, the Eagles got a walk-off win later in the day against the other Smith Center team. After the Blue Raiders scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead, the Eagles took advantage of two errors and a hit batter to load the bases with two outs. Jack Fields then singled to center on an 0-2 pitch to drive in Dawson VonFeldt with the tying run and Dalton Dale with the winning run.

Garrett Wellbrock then pitched a complete game one-hitter in the Eagles 9-1 win over Liberal in the final game of the night. Wellbrock allowed one unearned run over six innings while striking out six and walking one in the game that was called after six innings by run-rule.

Brady Kreutzer, Brock Lummus and Carson Jacobs all had two hits in the finale with Jacobs driving in three runs and Lummus two.

The Eagles sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 13 runs in the top of the first inning in their first game of the day against Smith Center-1. Brock Lummus allowed one hit with eight strikeouts and no walks over three innings.

The Senior Eagles close out pool play against Russell at 6 p.m. Saturday

Junior Eagles go 0-2

The Junior Eagles suffered a couple of tough losses, losing 6-5 to Russell and 12-11 to Smith Center-1 in extra innings.

Russell rallied to win in their last at-bat then the Blue Raiders scored six in the bottom of the fifth to force extra innings. After both teams scored four runs using the international tie-breaker in the first extra inning, Smith Center tallied the winning run in their second extra inning at bat.
