Second half big for Hays boys; cold for girls in road split in Colby

Hays High went on the road Friday to Colby following a week long break from competition. The Indians had played three game prior in Colby earlier in the season during the Orange & Black Classic.

Girls

Colby 42 - Hays 31

Hays led by eleven midway through the second quarter and had the ball but couldn't expand their advantage. The Indians led Colby by eight midway through the third quarter and had the ball but didn't score. Colby overcame an 0-12 start from the field to beat Hays 42-31.

The Indians' third quarter lead at 25-17 came on a Jersey Johnson three pointer with 4:10 showing on the clock. Hays got a stop and had the ball with the chance to regain a double digit advantage but turned the ball over. Colby closed the final 10:20 on a 25-6 run.

Highlights

Colby tied the game at 25 in the final minute of the third quarter before the Indians regained the lead 27-25 on the first possession of the fourth quarter. It would be their last lead. 

Colby went on a 17-4 run to close the game, winning 42-31.

Hays shot 42% in the first half but just 21% in the second half. Colby was 28% from the floor in half number one but 50% in the second.

Hays falls to 4-11 on the year. Colby breaks a three game skid and is 9-8 on the year.

Boys

#1 Hays 73 - Colby 40

Hays shot 63% in the first half but couldn't shake Colby through the first sixteen minutes of play. Colby took an early 5-2 lead before an 18-8 run build the Indians a lead at 20-13. Colby tied the game up at 23 midway through the second quarter before a 10-3 run once again established a seven point lead for Hays. Each time the Indians led by seven they possessed the basketball but turned it over on both occasions. Colby buried a three with five seconds left before halftime cutting the Indian lead down to 33-29.

Highlights

Much like the last three games, Hays dominated the second half. This time a 40-11 half propelled the Indians to a 73-40 victory. Hays beat Colby previously 56-47. Hays outscored Colby 18-6 in the third quarter and 22-5 in the fourth. They set a season high with 32 made field goals.

Ten different Indians scored led by the 17 of Dalyn Schwarz led the way with 17. TJ Nunnery scored 13 for a third straight game as Hays improves to 16-0 on the year. Colby has lost seven in a row, a streak started with a loss to Hays in January, and are now 6-11.

Hays is on the road to #10-4A Abilene on Tuesday.
