On Saturday, October 14, Hays Boy Scout Troop 133 scouts traveled to the Fort Larned National Historic Site to assist with and participate in their annual candlelight tours event.
The scouts helped set up a tent encampment similar to those used by the US Army in the 1860s and 1870s. Additionally, scouts set out the lanterns to light the way for tour patrons that evening.
Scouts from Troops 133 and Troop 156 portrayed troopers of the 7th Cavalry during their winter encampment at Fort Larned the winter of 1868-69. The scouts sang songs from the time with great enthusiasm and energy to the delight of tour guests.
As part of their efforts and service time, the scouts received the National Park Service Scout Ranger Award from the chief ranger of Fort Larned.
At the conclusion of the event, Troop 133 camped for the evening just down the road from Fort Larned at Camp Pawnee.
