Charles R. Settle Jr.

Charles R. Settle Jr. passed away at the Sheridan County Health Complex LTC on December 14, 2021. Charles, the son of Charles and Blanche (Lewis) Settle was born May 17, 1943, in Parsons, Kansas.

Charlie’s family moved to nearby Pittsburg, Kansas, where he attended the Pittsburg Elementary School. His family moved to Shawnee, Kansas where he attended and graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School. After high school he attended the University of Kansas where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree.

During his freshman year, he met Beverly Donnigan. Charlie and Bev were married three years later, September 5, 1964 at Christ the King Church in Kansas City, Kansas. He went immediately to the Master’s of Business Administration program, where he earned a Master’s degree and became a Certified Public Accountant. Charles also served in the Reserves for the United States Navy, serving six years.

After graduation, Charlie and Bev moved to Overland Park, Kansas, where Charlie worked for Arthur Young & Co. Charlie moved to work for Trans World Airlines, providing global audit services and managing an audit team. Charlie left TWA to work for Standard Milling Company in downtown Kansas City. Charlie later returned to Parsons, Kansas to work for PowerFlame and then for Labette Community College for more than 15 years, where he served as Dean of Administrative Services and Interim President of the College.

While in Parsons, Charlie continued his education by attending Oklahoma State University and graduating with his Doctorate in Education. In 2001, Charles was named Parsons Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year. He was a member of Kiwanis and in 2005-2006 he was named Rookie of the Year; in 2008-2009 was outstanding Kiwanian of the Year and served from 2010-2011 as President. Charles was an active member of Rotary and was elected President of Rotary. He also was a member of the Moose Lodge.

Charles was a good athlete and enjoyed golfing, tennis, ballroom dancing, line dancing, snow and water skiing, and liked to sail. He enjoyed going on cruises with his wife. They enjoyed their many adventures together during their 57 years of marriage. Charles retired in July of 2002, and they moved to Florida where they resided until 2020. In November of 2020, Charles and Beverly moved to Hoxie, Kansas to be near their daughter.

Charles is survived by his wife Beverly of Hoxie; son, Jim Settle of Greensboro, North Carolina; daughter, Mary Hansen and son-in-law Chris of Hoxie, Kansas; and grandchildren, Tanner and Jenny Hansen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles R. and Blanche Settle and a sister Janet Crosson Bayliss.

There will be no visitation or service.
