Throughout 2021, Ellis County staff has been considering options for the purpose of expanding the current public works facility versus building a new facility.
Part of this process has taken into consideration of the space needed to operate efficiently in one location.
Expanding the current facility would take away space for equipment and storage needs for equipment and aggregate piles which are already limited.
Staff has also been in communications with Union Pacific to lease additional ground for expansion, but the price of the lease is not economically feasible in comparison to purchasing a different piece of land with more acreage.
Ellis County staff is looking for a piece of property approximately 50-60 acres in size which would be centrally located in Ellis County, preferably close to the current shop location at 280th Avenue and Old Highway 40, and/or right outside the city limits of Hays.
