Joann (Hammerschmidt) Shapiro, 79, formerly of Hays, passed away July 23, 2021 in Orange County, California.

Born March 13, 1942 to Eugene and Amelia Hammerschmidt of Hays, Joann grew up on their farm north of Hays where she was active in the Buckeye community and 4-H. Following graduation from Girls Catholic High School, she received her cosmetology license and worked at Blanche’s Salon until moving to California in the late 1960s where she met and married Jerome Shapiro. She eventually owned her own salon in the Orange County area until she retired. Joann was avid for crafts and enjoyed sewing.

Joann was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother Dennis, and sister Lila Schippers and brother-in-law Norman Schippers, and a nephew Daniel Hammerschmidt. 

She is survived by her son William (Jenny) and two special granddaughters Jessica and Jayden, brothers Wayne (Marilee) of Galesburg, Illinois, Neil (Carolyn) of Bloomington, Indiana, and Mark (Bernice) of Hays, Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her family and friends were privileged to know her spirit of generosity and kindness, and her joy of living life to its fullest.
