TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The Fort Hays State Tigers clashed with the Northeastern State RiverHawks in a fierce conference contest on Saturday (Oct. 7). The contest ultimately concluded in a captivating 2-2 draw. Fort Hays State entered the match with a 3-5-1 record, while Northeastern State was determined to bolster their 4-3-2 standing.
The first half unfolded as a defensive battle, with both having limited scoring opportunities. In the opening half-hour, the match remained tightly contested, with goalkeepers Scott Pengelly for Fort Hays State and Juan Carlos Cordova for Northeastern State making crucial saves to keep the game scoreless.
However, the Tigers made a significant breakthrough in the 39th minute when Elias Ovelar Semeniuk found the net following a precise cross from Pablo Orozco. This well-executed play gave Fort Hays State a momentary lead. Northeastern State wasted no time in responding, leveling the score just three minutes later. Despite entering halftime in a tie, the Tigers appeared to dominate the first half, boasting eight corners and eight shots compared to the RiverHawks' zero corners and four shots.
The second half witnessed the Tigers maintaining their aggressive approach, getting a quick three shots in the first 10 minutes. In the 57th minute, the RiverHawks seized an opportunity and capitalized, as Ivan Lopez scored to give them a 2-1 advantage. However, the Tigers exhibited resilience, pushing forward in search of an equalizer. Their determination paid off in the 70th minute when Tadhg Walsh found the back of the net, courtesy of another well-placed cross from Orozco. Fort Hays State dominated the statistics, outshooting the RiverHawks 17-10 and earning 13 corner kicks compared to the RiverHawks' lone corner.
The thrilling match ultimately concluded in a 2-2 draw. Fort Hays State's aggressive play and ability to capitalize on key opportunities showcased their prowess, while Northeastern State fought valiantly to secure a share of the points.
With this result, the Tigers now hold a 3-5-3 overall record and 2-1-2 record in conference play. Currently occupying the third position in the conference, just behind Rogers State and Southern Nazarene, the Tigers set their sights on their next challenge – an away match against the Newman Jets scheduled for Tuesday (Oct. 10) in Wichita.
