The Fort Hays State wrestling team compete at home for the first time this season on Sunday (Dec. 12) when the Tigers host the annual FHSU-Bob Smith Open. Action is slated to begin at 9 a.m. with approximately 200 wrestlers representing 18 schools competing on six mats inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Fourteen Tiger wrestlers are slated to compete in the event.
Tickets for the Bob Smith Open are $10 per adult and $5 for youth. Live results will also be available via TrackWrestling.
A.J. Cooper and Marty Verhaeghe are ranked nationally in Division II. Cooper is 10th at 285 pounds and Verhaeghe is 11th at 184 pounds. Verhaeghe leads the team with 18 wins this season compiling an 18-3 record while acquiring the sole individual title for the Tigers this season at the Kaufman/Brand/Bayly Open. Cooper has accumulated two third-place finishes this season at the Dakota Wesleyan Open and the Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open. Tereus Henry has also placed in all three tournaments he has attended, finishing second at the Maryville Open and third at the Dakota Wesleyan Open and the Doane Open.
