Carson Kraus, a fifth-grader at Holy Family Elementary School, was named the state winner of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution 2020-2021 History Essay Contest. He was sponsored by the Courtney-Spalding Chapter.

As the Kansas winner in his grade, his essay advanced to the divisional level.

Carson, who read his winning essay, received a certificate and bronze chapter medal at the chapter meeting in February.

The essay topic was “the Boston Massacre.” Students were asked to imagine witnessing the event and describe its role in organizing the colonists against Britain, and detail an imaginary family discussion about it.

Courtney-Spalding Essay Chair Monica Dreiling invited all fifth-grade students attending Hays schools to participate in the annual contest. There were 32 entries.

The 300- to 600-word essays were judged on historical accuracy, organization of material, originality, interest and convention.
