VICTORIA- Victoria doubled in size as Herzogfest drew crowds from all over Ellis County to celebrate German culture.
The two-day celebration ran Friday and Saturday on Main Street, featuring German food, children's activities, live music and a car show.
The celebration remembers the town’s origins when ethnic Germans from Russia’s Volga River region founded the town of Herzog in 1876, near the earlier English settlement of Victoria, which was founded in 1873 by George Grant.
Most English settlers later returned to Britain, but the Germans stayed and the two towns merged in 1913.
