Cheryl Deines

Cheryl Deines, of WaKeeney, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2020.  

Cheryl was born to Roy David Keller, Jr. and Martha Joan Campbell in Chanute, KS, on January 28, 1958.

She graduated from WaKeeney High School in 1976, and then received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Fort Hays State University. She was a Speech-Language Pathologist for 27 years in WaKeeney and Quinter, retiring in 2016. 

Cheryl married Keith Michael Deines on August 7, 1977, in WaKeeney, and they enjoyed 42 years of marriage. They welcomed their daughter, Casey, in 1982. Cheryl was overjoyed by the birth of her grandson Samuel on June 21, 2019, sharing many smiles, hugs, songs, and stories in their time together.

Cheryl loved her family, friends and dog Mo and had a passion for the outdoors and horses. She was known for her warm smile and kind heart. She had a gift for writing and storytelling and shared this beautiful gift with many over the years. 

Cheryl passed away from cancer, at her home surrounded by the love of her husband, daughter, and son-in-law Douglas Shepperd. She will be dearly missed by her family — her husband; her mother; daughter, Casey and husband Douglas Shepperd of Lawrence, Kansas; grandson, Samuel; brothers, Jim and wife Liesel Keller of Hays, Kansas, John and wife Pam Keller of Lawrence, Kansas; sister, Roanne Stein of Salina, Kansas; nieces, Jenna and Campbell Keller, Sylvia and Julie Keller, and Kursti Hileman; and nephews Matthew and Christopher Reed; brother-in-law Rick and wife Leta Deines of WaKeeney, Kansas; niece, Sally Standard; and nephew Tyson Deines. She was preceded in death by her father, and niece, Jamie Keller.

Celebration of Life service will be 9:30 a.m., Saturday, June 20, 2020, at WaKeeney City Park.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to WaKeeney United Methodist Church or Old Friends Equine farm in Kentucky.  Donations to the organization may be sent to Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th, WaKeeney, KS  67672.
