David Ray Schlegel

David Ray Schlegel, 81, Clinton, Missouri, died Saturday, June 6, 2020, at his home.

Mr. Schlegel was born August 19, 1938, in Augusta, Kansas, the son of Harrison Benjamin and Doris Thelma (Ruggles) Schlegel.  He was a resident of Missouri, for 20+ years, moving from Kansas. 

After his retirement from the United States Navy where he served his country from 1955 to 1975, David was the owner of the Chief Restaurant, Colby, Kansas, owner of the Burger Bar Restaurant, Colby, Kansas, Regional Manager for Cains Coffee Company Kansas City Division, Necco Coffee Company, Kansas City, Missouri.  During his military career, he earned the Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Commendation Medal, Fifth Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea).

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Otis, Kansas, a life member of VFW Post 8100, Grandview, Missouri, and a life member of Vietnam Veterans of America.

In 1976, he married Phyllis Diane Eberly in Atwood, Kansas.

Survivors include:  his wife, Phyllis Schlegel, Clinton, Missouri; two sons, David Harrison Schlegel (Kimberly, Wheeling, Missouri, and Kenneth Ray Schlegel (Ralf, Hyde Park, Vermont; one daughter, Joanna Marie Burkhart, Winston, Missouri; 15 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Sylvia Brooks, Nixa, Missouri, and Treva Schumacher, Overland Park, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Eldon Dean Schlegel; and two grandchildren.

Church visitation will be Friday, June 12, 2020, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:50 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, Otis, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Friday, June 12, 2020, at 10:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, Otis, Kansas, with Pastor Angie Vertz officiating.  (The church is requiring all funeral attendees to wear masks.)  Interment will be in the Otis Methodist Cemetery, Otis, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
