Monarchs 18U split season opener with Russell

The TMP-Marian Monarchs 18U baseball team split a doubleheader with Russell Friday at the TMP-Field in the season opener for both. Russell rallied to tie game one then scored five in the eighth for 14-10 extra inning win game one. The Monarchs grabbed the early lead and took game two 6-2 in five innings.

Game 1: Russell 14, Monarchs 10 (8 innings)
TMP-Marian led 6-4 after five innings but Russell rallied with four runs in the sixth and five in the top of the eighth to take the lead for good.

After falling behind in the top of the sixth, the Monarchs scored twice in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 8-8.

Each team scored in the seventh before Russell broke it open in the eighth on Andrew Roth’s RBI double.

Mason Robbins allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief and takes the loss.

Noah Gibson had three of the Monarchs seven hits and drove in two runs. Jace Wentling also had two RBIs.

Game 2: Monarchs 6, Russell 2 (5 innings)
The Monarchs scored three in the first and two in the second to take game two and gain a split. Nick Helget’s two-out double to right scored two in the bottom of the first and gave TMP-Marian the lead for good. Nick Herman followed with an RBI single which scored Helget.

Tyson Dinkel and Ethan Atherton both drove in runs in the second.

Herman allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks and picked up the complete game victory.

Zeke Haag had two hits. Atherton and Helget both drove in two runs.
