The annual summer season watering restrictions are now in place for Hays water customers as well as those who have private water wells.

During the summer period, the city ordinance prohibits outside watering between the hours of noon and 7 p.m.

"That's when evaporation is at its peak," explains Holly Dickman, city water conservation specialist.

There are several water waste prohibitions year round:

• Washing sidewalks,  parking lots and driveways
• Allowing water loss through leaks/breaks in plumbing systems
• Allowing water loss by runoff onto sidewalks or into street guttering from watering yards or other vegetation

The additional watering restrictions are in effect from June 1 through Sept. 30.

According to the May 28 Kansas Drought Monitor map, the southwest portion of Ellis County is in severe drought, while the remainder of the county is in a moderate drought.

All of Ellis County is in drought conditions as of May 28.
