Leon L. Johnson

Leon L. Johnson, age 71, of Goodland passed away Monday, April 20, 2020.  He was born April 1, 1949 to Buck and Glessner (Sears) Johnson in St. Francis, Kansas.  Leon grew up in Denver, Colorado where he attended Sabin Elementary through 6th grade, O’Doule middle school for 7th and 8th grade, and John F. Kennedy High School where he was in their first graduating class of 1967.   On November 16, 1969 he married Carol Perizzolo in Denver.  To this union two children were born, Leon Douglas and Jeanne Lynn.   

After attending Community College in Denver, Leon began working at General Iron Works until moving to Kansas in 1971 where he worked for Great Western Sugar Company in Goodland.  When Great Western Sugar Company closed, he began working for Sherman County Road and Bridge where he worked for 36 years, he was a road crew supervisor until his death. 

He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Goodland.  He enjoyed being an avid fisherman, and hunter for deer, elk and pheasant.  Not a single day went by that he didn’t have one of the grandkids with him teaching them something about hunting, fishing or fixing something.  Leon and Carol celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 16, 2019, he loved spending time with all of his family and friends. 

He is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Douglas (Shauna) of Goodland; daughter, Jeanne Stasser of Goodland; grandchildren:  Alyson and Chase Johnson of Goodland; Coy and Dusty Johnson of Hays, KS; Jordan Garza of Goodland; Blake Stasser of Greeley, CO; Tristen and Clay Stasser of Goodland; great grandchildren, Logan, Jameson, Lio and Conor; and many other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and brother, Lonnie Reeves.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a memorial service to celebrate Leon’s life will be held at a later date.
