After a warm and windy Thursday, the Hays area could receive some much-needed rainfall beginning after 3 p.m.

There is a 30 percent chance of afternoon showers or thunderstorms Thursday afternoon, increasing to 50 percent into the evening, the National Weather Service in Dodge City reported.

There is a possibility of potentially severe, but isolated, thunderstorms — bringing winds over 50 mph and frequent lighting. The NWS predicted over a 20 percent chance the Hays area could receive more than a half-inch of rainfall.

Ellis County is nearly 7 inches behind average annual rainfall in 2022, with no precipitation recorded by the K-State Research Center in the first half of September.

There is a 20 percent chance of additional showers or thunderstorms before skies clear and the mercury rises this weekend. Highs in the mid-90s to low-triple digits are expected Saturday through Tuesday.
