Kyle Calrin has been named the director of the Hays West Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative.

Carlin has served as the assistant director of the co-op for the last two years.

The co-op serves Hays, Ellis, Victoria and La Crosse.

Before his tenure as assistant director, he served as a school psychologist for the co-op for five years.

He also worked as a school psychologist for Southwest Kansas Area Cooperative, which includes Dodge City, and the Northwest Kansas Education Service Center, which includes Oakley.

Carlin, 35, has a bachelor's of arts in psychology, master's of science in school psychology and an education specialist degree in school psychology from Fort Hays State University. He has completed his building leadership certificate from FHSU and will complete his district leadership certificate this summer.

Carlin helped bring the CHAMPS behavior model to the district. He has also written a book that seeks to help children with social/emotional learning.

"I don't expect any changes," he said of the co-op. "I hope to continue what the coop has been doing the last couple of years. We have had a lot of stuff around supporting new teachers and trying to get evidence-based practices in our schools and ultimately trying to build student independence."

Carlin will take his new post on July 1. He is replacing Chris Hipp, who was recently hired by Hays USD 489 as the new assistant superintendent of finance and human resources.
