Comeback win for Hays in sub-state opener

Hays High gave up twelve points in the first quarter and trailed by nine through the first eight minutes to Arkansas City.  The Indians gave up just fourteen points over the remaining three quarters on their way to a 42-26 victory in the opening round of sub-state.  

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-0 lead through the first four minutes and 12-2 with just under a minute remaining in the first quarter.  Hays trailed by nine midway through the second quarter when the comeback began.  Hays ended the half on an 8-0 run and extended that run to 17-0 midway through third.

Highlights

The Indians took the lead during that run and never gave it back.  Arkansas City scored just three points in the third quarter and went 9:40 through the middle of the game without a single point.

Hays never led by less than twelve points during the fourth quarter on their way to the sub-state victory.  The Indians will travel to Great Bend on Friday with a spot in the state tournament on the line.  The Panthers beat Salina Central 63-60 in overtime.

The Indians were led by the double-double of Dalyn Schwarz notching 11 points and 13 rebounds.  Hays controlled the backboard with a 38-13 advantage.  

Hays improves to 15-6 on the year.  Arkansas City ends their season at 10-11.
