HAYS – A Ryan Stoecklein three pointer later in the fourth quarter lifted the TMP-Marian Monarchs past the Phillipsburg Panthers Monday in the first round of the 3A sub-state 42-38.

The Monarchs rushed out to a 5-2 lead after Carson Jacobs converted a three-point play and Jackson Schulte followed that with a field goal giving TMP and early lead.
But the lead was short lived as Phillipsburg answered with a 10-3 first quarter run to build a 12-8 lead.
Brady Kreutzer scored back-to-back field goals to tie the game at 12. Then with the game tied at 14 Phillipsburg’s Ty Sides hit a three-pointer giving Phillipsburg a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The two teams combined to scored just nine points in the second quarter as Phillipsburg built a 22-18 lead at halftime.
The third quarter saw five lead changes with Phillipsburg leading by as much as four points and TMP led by three at 33-30 at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter TMP built a five-point lead on a Kreutzer layup only to see Sides hit back-to-back three-pointers and put Phillipsburg up 36-35.
TMP’s Ryan Stoecklein hit his second three of the game to put the Monarchs up 38-36, a lead they would never give up on their way to the 42-38 win.

Schulte and Sides each scored 12 points.
TMP improves to 17-4 and will take on Hoisington Thursday in the sub-state semifinals in Beloit.
Hoisington defeated Concordia 66-24.
The No. 1 seed Beloit downed Russell 74-37 and will take on the five-seed Norton after they upset No. 4 Minneapolis 55-49.
