PARK CITY – Both Hays High Indian wrestlers who qualified for the 5A state tournament in Park City earned a top six finish Saturday.
Davontai Robinson
After going 1-1 on day one both Davontai Robinson, at 182 and
Gavin Nutting at 220 bounced back to earn a medal on Saturday.
Robinson opened the tournament with a first-period fall over Blake Smith (Topeka-Seaman). In the semifinals, also on Friday, Robinson lost to Trevor Dopps (Goddard) by a second-period fall.
Robinson bounced back with a pair of consolation wins over Shayne Curdie (Bonner Springs) and Sean Carroll (OP-St. Thomas Aquinas) before dropping a consolation semifinal match against Lynauz Cox (Maize-South).
Then in the fifth-place match Robinson lost by fall in the third period to Charlie Frisch (Wichita-Kapaun Mt. Carmel).
Robinson finished the season 27-13.
Gavin Nutting
Gavin Nutting earned a fifth place finished at 220.
Nutting opened the tournament with a second-period fall over Ezra Shove (Topeka-Seaman). In the championship quarterfinals Nutting lost by a 21-6 tech fall to Cade Lautt (Lenexa-St. James Academy).
Nutting battled back with a pair of falls in the second and third consolation rounds over Gabe Cornett (KC-Turner) and Gabe Arredondo (Bishop Carroll Catholic).
In the consolation semifinals John Hubbel (OP-Blue Valley Southwest) defeated Nutting 16-7.
In the fifth-place match Nutting picked up a 9-8 win over Mason Ross (Wichita-Northwest) to finish fifth and 36-11 on the season.
The Indians finished 19th with 26 teams points.
