TMP sweeps Trinity Catholic in regular season finale

HUTCHINSON – The TMP girls and boys basketball teams closed out the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Trinity Catholic Thursday night in Hutchinson.

Girls: TMP 58, Trinity 49
The TMP Lady Monarchs picked up their third straight win Thursday night as they picked up a 58-49 win over Trinity Catholic.

The Monarchs raced out to an 8-0 lead and after the Celtics cut the TMP lead back to two the Monarchs outscored Trinity 7-3 to end the quarter and lead 15-9.

Sophia Balthazor hit three of her game-high five three pointers in the second quarter helping TMP build a nine-point lead at 29-20 with six minutes to play in the first half.

The Celtics closed the first half and opened the second half on an 11-0 run to build a 31-29 lead early in the third quarter.

The Celtics led by as many as three in the third quarter before Balthazor connected on her fifth three of the game to put TMP up 43-42 at the end of the third quarter.

The game was tied at 47 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter when Jaci VonLintel knocked a three to put TMP up 50-47. They would never trail again on their way to a 58-49 win.

Balthazor led two in double-figures with a career-high 21 points and Jaci VonLintel added a career-high 13.

Hayley Hughes led Trinity Catholic with 19 points.

TMP improved to 9-12 heading into Tuesday’s first-round sub-state game against Russell.

Boys: TMP 61, Trinity Catholic 54
The TMP boys outscored 19-4 down the stretch in the fourth quarter as the Monarchs rallied from down seven to beat the Celtics 61-54 Thursday.

TMP raced out to a 10-2 first quarter lead as Carson Jacobs scored eight straight points. Trinity quickly cut the lead back to two points before TMP took a 16-10 lead into the second quarter.

The Monarchs built an eight-point lead in the second quarter at 23-15 only to see the Celtics finish the first half on a 12-4 run to tie the game at 27 at halftime.

The Celtics built their largest lead in the third quarter at 43-36 before Lucas Lang banked in a corner three to end the third quarter cutting Trinity’s lead to 43-39

In the fourth quarter the Celtics led by as many as seven points, at 49-42 before the Monarchs closed the game on a 19-5 run. Carson Jacobs scored nine of his game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter as the Monarchs picked up the 61-54 win.

Game highlighs

Jacobs added 16 rebounds for his second career double-double.

Jackson Schulte added 15 points for TMP.

TMP improved to 16-4 on the season. They will host Phillipsburg on Monday in the first-round of the 3A sub-state.
