HILL CITY- The final regular season installment of the Area Game of the Week series featured a battle of birds as the Hill City Ringnecks hosted the Plainville Cardinals.
The first quarter was a dog fight, but Plainville had the upper hand resulting in a 19-9 Plainville lead.
The second quarter was more of the same, leading to a 32-19 Cardinal lead at the half. Senior Aubree Dewey scored 16 of her teams 32 points.
The Ringnecks made a solid comeback push, cutting the lead to just 4 by the end of the third quarter. It was 39-35 heading to the final act.
The final quarter was all Cardinals. Plainville was able to clamp down defensively and allow only 2 points in the final quarter, leading to a 51-37 victory.
Aubree Dewey had an impressive stat line with 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Junior Breckan Born led the way for Hill City, as she netted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cardinals move to 9-10 on the season. They'll play their final game of the regular season on Tuesday against TMP.
Hill City falls to 3-15. Their final game of the year will be on Tuesday when they host Norton.
The boys game was next, as Plainville and Hill City came in with identical 11-7 records.
Plainville led 15-5 early, but a 7-2 run by Hill City made it 17-12 after one.
The second quarter was a high-flying affair, with buckets aplenty. The lead was as little as 3, but the Cardinals were able to build the advantage to 43-30 by the half. Junior Clay Baalman had 13 first half points.
The third quarter was action packed and hard hitting. Hill City cut the lead to as little as 6, but faltered toward the end of the third. Plainville led 54-45 heading into the final frame.
Hill City gave the Cardinals all they wanted in the fourth but Plainville's resilience won out, as they were victorious 69-62.
Sophomore Anders Dewey finished with 15 points off the bench. Senior Jared Casey had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Senior Jacob Lindenman led the way for Hill City with 16 points. Senior Dalen Journigan had 15 points.
The loss ends a 6-game Hill City win streak. They play their final regular season game against Norton on Friday.
Planville is now 12-7. They host TMP on Tuesday to close out their season.
