Hays sweeps Abilene at home

Girls

The girls game had a little bit of everything in a 47-44 Hays High victory over Abilene Tuesday night.  The Indians used a 16-3 run in the second quarter to build a 27-14 lead at halftime. 

The Indians led by thirteen still with 4:40 left in the third quarter but scored just six points over the next twelve minutes.  Abilene used the time to outscore Hays 23-6 run and lead 44-40 with forty seconds left in the game.

Highlights

Hays missed two free throws with just over 37 seconds remaining but Re Green grabbed the offensive rebound and fed Tasiah Nunnery for the final of her career high 21 points while closing the gap down to 44-42.  Abilene never shot again in the game as they turned the ball over the next three possessions. 

Following the first turnover the Indians missed a shot but Green again cleaned up the glass and her own put back tied the game at 44.  She was fouled on the play and banked in the free throw for a 45-44 lead with ten seconds remaining.  Brooklyn Schaffer made both ends of a one and one opportunity with five seconds left after the next turnover for the final margin of 47-44.

Hays improves to 5-12 on the season and Abilene now has the same record.  The two will rematch in Abilene next Thursday to end the regular season.  

Boys

Dylan Ruder scored at the buzzer ending the first quarter for 12-11 Hays lead and never trailed again on their way to a 56-46 win over state ranked Abilene on Tuesday night.  

A 10-0 run that ended the first quarter and began the second quarter pushed the Indian advantage to seven for the first of eight times.  Hays led by seven for most of the second quarter before Abilene tipped in a missed shot as the halftime horn sounded to trim score to 25-20.

Highlights

Abilene tied the game two times in the second half.  A 7-0 run in the third quarter tied the game at 29 points and another 7-0 that began at the end of the third and ended in the early fourth time the game at 38.  The Cowboys had a chance to take the lead on a free throw on the basket that tied game but missed the shot short. 

TJ Nunnery scored just twenty seconds later to give the Indians the lead and spark a 12-3 run.  Five different Indians scored during the run that gave Hays a 50-41 advantage with 2:35 remaining.  Abilene had one last charge as they converted a three point play and closed the gap down to 50-46 with just under ninety seconds left to play.  

The Indian defense though didn't allow another point while they made four of seven free throws wrapped around a Dylan Ruder layup.

Hays improves to 11-6 on the year as Abilene now has the same record.  The two will match up in Abilene next Thursday to end the regular season.

Jace Linenberger led the team with 12 points, Jason Krannawitter scored 11 while Dylan Ruder added ten.
