TMP splits doubleheader with Sacred Heart

HAYS – The TMP girls and boys basketball teams split a Saturday doubleheader with Salina Heart in a pair of games that were postponed in January because of winter weather.

In the girls game the Lady Monarchs led wire-to-wire and put an end to their three-game losing streak with the TMP boys fell in a battle of ranked teams.

Girls: TMP 67, Sacred Heart 45

The TMP Lady Monarchs got back-to-back three pointers by Megan Hamel and Kyleigh Allen to open the game on a 6-0 run. Emilee Lane added five straight to put TMP up 11-5. The Monarchs led build an eight point lead at 19-11  through the first quarter.

TMP led by as many as seven in the second quarter before leading by six at halftime 29-23.

Early in the third quarter TMP led by as many as eight at 35-27. But with three minutes to play in the quarter Sacred Heart closed within two at 36-34.

TMP answered the Lady Knights run with a 15-2 run to end the third and begin the fourth quarter and built a 51-36 lead. The Monarchs led by as many of 20 in the fourth quarter on their way to a 67-45 win.

Kyleigh Allen scored a team-high 16 points for TMP.

The Monarchs improved to 6-11. Sacred Heart dropped to 12-5.

Game highlights

Boys: Sacred Heart 54, TMP 48

In a battle of ranked teams TMP (No. 7 3A) raced out to an early 10-point lead only to see Sacred Heart (No. 2 2A) rally for a 54-48 win.

TMP’s Brady Kreutzer started the game with a three point play to give TMP a 3-0 lead. After back-to-back three’s from Ryan Stoecklein and Jackson Schulte TMP led 9-0. The Monarchs led by as much as 10 in the first quarter before leading 12-7 after the first quarter.

The Monarchs were held scoreless for nearly seven minutes to end the first quarter and begin the second quarter while Sacred Heart closed within two at 15-13. TMP was able to build the lead back to eight in the second quarter and led by six at halftime, 25-19.

In the third quarter TMP held a six-point lead at 31-25 but Sacred Heart put together a 13-1 run to take a 38-31 lead. TMP was able to tie the game against at 38. But a pair of free throws gave the Knights a lead with just under five minutes to play. It was a lead Sacred Heart would give back as they held off TMP for a 54-48 win.

Jackson Schulte led TMP with a game-high 21 points.

Caleb Gilliland scored 18 for Sacred Heart.

Sacred Heart improved to 15-2 with the win while TMP dropped to 13-3.

The Monarchs host Great Bend on Tuesday.
