Hays boys win, girls lose in Valentine's date with Liberal

Girls

Liberal broke open a two point ball game over midway through the first quarter with an 18-2 run.  Hays would never recover falling 62-29.  Hays tied the game at two points and was down just 10-8 before the big Redskin run.  Liberal outscored Hays 33-6 over the next fifteen minutes of game play.

Machia Mullens led an efficient Liberal attack with 17 points as the Redskins shot 54% from the field.  Aleyia Ruder scored in double figures for the sixth times this year as she dumped in 11 points.  

Highlights

Hays falls to 4-12 on the year and 1-5 in Western Athletic Conference play.  Liberal is #2 in 6A and moves to 17-0 and has won 51 consecutive regular season games and 21 straight conference contests.

Boys

Hays scored the first eight points of the game and never trailed in Liberal winning 67-56.  The Indians built a 16 point lead early in the second quarter before the Redskins pulled within eight late in the quarter.  The Indians scored the final five points of the second quarter for a 32-19 halftime lead.

A second half three point barrage from Liberal kept the game close but the Indian advantage never dipped below eight points.  Hays kept the lead thanks to 61% shooting on the game and 10 of 15 in the second half. 

Highlights

Liberal sent Hays to the free throw line in the fourth quarter 18 times and the Indians responded by making 13 of those attempts.  

Hays outscored Liberal 21-7 in the first quarter and was outscored by three points rest of the game.

Carson Kieffer established a career high for a second consecutive game with 17 points.  Dalyn Schwarz added 15 and Jason Krannawitter scored 10.

Hays improves to 10-6 on the year and 5-1 in the WAC.  Liberal falls to 7-10 and 2-5 in conference play.

Hays returns home for the first of three straight home games when they play Abilene on Tuesday.
