Hays resumes WAC play with a split in Dodge City

Posted Feb 08, 2020 3:43 AM

A pair of long scoring droughts cost the Hays High Indians a shot at a road upset on Friday night in Dodge City.  Hays led by five twice in the first quarter but scored just two points over an eight minute span of the first and second quarter to fall behind 20-11.

The Indians closed the gap down to three in the second quarter and trailed by eight heading into the second half.  Re Green buried a right corner three pointer to pull Hays within five at 35-30 with 3:30 left to go in the third quarter.  The Indians didn't score over the next 8:15 and could not recover as the Red Demons used the time to go on a 15-0 run.

Once Dodge City's advantage reached double figures they were never threatened again winning over Hays 56-34.

Hays had their best shooting game of the year at 54% in the loss.

Coach Kyle Porter

Hays falls to 4-10 and 1-3 in Western Athletic Conference play.  Dodge City is 12-4 and 3-2.

Hays High outscored Dodge City in every quarter on their way to a 69-48 win in Dodge City.  Hays led by two at the end of the first quarter after a back and forth first.  Dodge City took a 14-13 lead on a three pointer in the first minute of the second quarter.  Hays regained the lead twenty seconds later and never trailed again.

An 8-0 run put Hays up by seven points midway through the second quarter before Dodge City pulled back within two.  Dalyn Schwarz and Carson Kieffer combined for five points in the final thirty seconds of the first half for a 30-23 halftime lead.

Dodge City's three point barrage never found much ground in the second half as Hays opened the second half on a 13-5 run to build their first double digit lead.  The Indian's advantage never dropped to single digits rest of the way.  Hays made nine of twelve third quarter field goals and by fifteen heading to the fourth quarter.

Hays snaps a three game losing streak as Schwarz tied a career high with 19 points.  Dylan Ruder scored 16 and Jace Linenberger added 10.  Those three combined for twenty-six rebounds in the game.

Coach Alex Hutchins

Dodge City attempted 41 three pointers making 13.

Hays improves to 9-5 on the year and is 4-0 in the WAC.  Dodge City drops a seventh straight game and is 3-13 on the year and 1-4 in league play.
