The Kansas State Board of Education adopted a new tobacco policy as of Dec. 19 and is encouraging local school boards to also adopt the same policy.

The Hays school board will discuss the policy at its meeting at 6:30 Monday at the Rockwell Administration Center.

The policy prohibits the use of tobacco products by students, staff and visitors at any district facility. This includes vaping devices.

It does not include FDA-approved nicotine replacement therapies, including  nicotine patches, nicotine gum and nicotine lozenges.

The policy would include parents, contractors, volunteers and any other visitors on school property.

The policy also bans any materials, clothing or gear that promotes tobacco products.

Truck purchase

The board will also consider a low-bid of $30,633 for a truck from Lewis Ford for the maintenance department. The board will also be asked to approve a purchase of a lift gate and snow plow for the truck for a total cost of $42,552.

Rusty Lindsay, USD 489 director of buildings and grounds, will also give an update on facilities and maintenance.
