Hays boys to championship, girls to fourth place game with wins

Girls

Clutch fourth quarter free throw shooting for Hays propelled them to a 50-42 win in Colby on Friday at the Orange & Black Classic.  The Indians made seven of eight free throws in the final sixty-six seconds of the game.  Freshman Carly Lang made five of six and junior Brooklyn Schaffer made both sides of a one and one to seal the victory.

Hays trailed most of the first quarter and was behind Highland Park 15-12 after the first eight minutes.  Hays took took the lead for good at 19-17 with four and a half minutes left in the second quarter.  The Lady Scots did tie the game once in the second quarter but Hays pushed the lead to four by halftime at 27-23.

Highlights

The Indians never trailed in the second half but it was far from easy.  Hays built the lead to six several times in the third quarter and eventually seven in the fourth.  Highland Park closed the gap down to 45-52 with ninety seconds left.  The Indian's free throw shooting did the rest.

Aleyia Ruder led the Indians with 12 points.  Three more players scored seven or more points.  Carly Lang and Tasiah Nunnery each scored nine and Brooklyn Schaffer scored seven.

Hays improves to 3-7 on the year while Highland Park drops to 3-8.  The Indians will take on Valley Center at 1:00 in the Community building on Friday for forth place.

Boys

Hays used a 12-2 run to start the game and a 10-0 run at the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second to build a big first half lead on their way to a win over Beloit 51-42.  

Hays built a first half lead of sixteen in the second quarter before the Trojans responded.  The Indians went quite for three minutes on offense allowing Beloit to cut the lead in half 24-16.  It would be as close as the Trojans would get rest of the way.  

Highlights

Indians made just three of fifteen field goal attempts in the second half but held Beloit to just twenty-four second points.  Beloit tried to extend the game with fouls in the fourth quarter.  The Indians made ten of sixteen free throws to hold onto the lead.

Hays was led by the career high of Jason Krannawitter with fourteen points including three three point field goals.  TJ Nunnery added 13 and Dalyn Schwarz scored ten.

Hays moves to 8-2 on the year and will play in the tournament championship at 6:00 in the Community Building on Saturday evening.  #6-3A Beloit falls to 7-2.
