Hays opens tournament play in Colby with Scott City

First quarter turnovers by Hays High resulted in a double digit Scott City lead by the end of the first quarter at the 35th Annual Orange & Black Classic in Colby Thursday afternoon.  Hays jumped out to a 3-0 and 5-3 lead in the first three minutes of the game. 

Scott City then took advantage of seven Hays turnovers and went on an 18-0 run and grabbed a 21-5 lead.  The Beavers never led by less than ten points rest of the game. The Indians cut a sixteen point deficit down to ten in the second quarter but missed a three pointer to bring the gap to single figures. 

Highlights

Scott City took a fourteen point lead into the second half and still led by thirteen when the Beavers went on a 19-3 run that went into the fourth quarter and led to a 56-35 win.

Hays was led by Aleyia Ruder who scored ten.  The Indians drop to 2-7 on the year.  #4-3A Scott City is now 8-1.  Hays will face the losing team of Goodland and Highland Park at Colby High School at 3:00.

Boys

Hays hit a three pointer on the first possession of the game and never looked back on their way to a 64-44 win over Scott City.  The game was never closer than three points at 6-3.  The Indians went on a 9-0 run and never led by less than nine points rest of the game. 

Hays led 17-6 after one quarter and built the lead to eighteen in the second quarter before leading 30-16 at halftime.

Highlights

Jace Linenberger came off the bench for a game high 21 points which set a new career high for the sophomore.  Hays opened the second half on a 11-0 run where Dylan Ruder grabbed a pair of baskets on his way to a second double-double this season at 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Hays doubled up Scott City on rebounds 38-19.  Hays has won six in a row and is now 7-2 on the year.  Scott City falls to 4-5.  The Indians will play the winner of Goodland and Beloit on Friday at the Community Building at 4:45.
