TMP girls come up short against Trego

WAKEENEY – Trego used a 7-0 to build a first half lead over TMP and then outscored the TMP Lady Monarchs 15-3 to open the second half on their way to a 63-48-win Monday in the first round of the Mid-Continent League Tournament.

Trego rushed out to a 6-2 first quarter lead before TMP scored eight straight, capped off by back-to-back three pointers from Kyleigh Allen and Sophia Balthazor to put the Lady Monarchs up 10-6.

After leading by four twice in the first quarter TMP led 17-15 at the end of the first quarter on the second Balthazor three of the first half.

The Monarchs held a two-point lead for much of the second quarter and were up 23-21 on an Emilee Lane layup but Trego responded with a 7-0 run to take a 28-23 lead. A lead they were never relinquish.

After trialing by as much as six in the second quarter TMP closed within two at 34-32 on a pair of Balthazor free throws but a Tillie Malinowski layup at the buzzer gave Trego the 36-32 lead at halftime.

Trego’s Lili Shubert and Libby Frost sparked a 15-3 run to start the third quarter as they built a 51-35 lead. Shubert scored nine of her game-high 27 points during the run. Libby Frost scored six points to open the third quarter.

Trego led 54-39 through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter TMP outscored Trego 9-4 to cut the Trego led back to 10 but Trego made five free throws in the final minutes to secure the 63-48 win.

TMP had four players scored in double-figures led by the 13 points of Kyleigh Allen. Sophia Balthazor scored a career-high 12. Emilee Lane and Megan Hamel chipped in 10 each.

Trego’s Lili Shubert finished with 27 points and Libby Frost added 12.

Trego improved to 10-0 and TMP dropped to 4-6.

The Golden Eagles will take on Smith Center Friday in the championship semifinals. The Lady Red downed Ellis Monday 59-48.

TMP will take on Ellis Thursday at the Stockton Grade School.

In the other two first round games Hoxie held off Norton 49-43 and Phillipsburg beat Oakley 61-49.

Phillipsburg will take on Hoxie in Friday’s semifinals while Oakley plays Norton Thursday at Stockton.
