TMP basketball splits with Trego

The TMP boys earned their seventh straight victory Tuesday night in WaKeeney while the TMP girls dropped their second straight MCL game as the Monarchs split a doubleheader with the Trego Golden Eagles.

Girls: Trego 62, TMP 40
The Trego Golden Eagles used a pair of 9-0 runs in the first quarter to build a double-digit lead Tuesday on their way to a 62-40 win over the TMP Lady Monarchs.

Trego’s Lili Shubert scored the games first nine points and 11 straight for Trego as they built an 11-4 first quarter.

After their second 9-0 run in the first quarter Trego led 20-4. Trego led 23-9 after the first quarter. TMP senior Adell Riedel suffered an apparent knee injury midway through the quarter and did not return.

TMP ended the first quarter and began the second quarter on an 8-3 run to cut the Trego led to 23-12 but TMP would never get closer as Trego cruised to a 62-40 win.

Game highlights

Trego’s Lili Shubert and Libby Frost each scored 22 for the Golden Eagles who improved to 8-0 and 2-0 in the MCL.

The Monarchs’ Kyleigh Allen tied her career-high with 14. TMP drops to 3-5 and 2-2 in the MCL.

Boys: TMP 65, Trego 44
The TMP used an 11-1 run to start the second half as they pulled away from the Trego Golden Eagles for a 65-44 win Tuesday in WaKeeney.

The Monarchs and the Golden Eagles traded baskets early in the game before Trego built a 9-5 first quarter lead.

Down four late in the first quarter TMP’s Carson Jacobs scored six points in-a-row to tie the game at the end of the first half at 15. He then added a dunk to start the second quarter that gave TMP the 17-15 lead.

The Jacobs dunk sparked a 12-3 TMP run as they took a 27-18 lead.

Trego was able to close within three, at 31-28 at the break.

TMP’s Lucas Lang started the second half with a three-pointer leading TMP to an 11-1 run giving TMP a 42-29 lead.

Trego was able to close the deficit back to nine on one occasion in the third quarter but the Monarchs stretched the lead to 19 with a 10-0 run.

Trego got no closer as the Monarchs earned the 65-44 win.

TMP boys highlights

Carson Jacobs led the Monarchs with 18 points. Jackson Schulte added 15 and Lucas Lang finished with 11.

Trego’s Charlie Russell record a new career-high 18 points.

TMP improves to 7-1 and 4-0 in the MCL while Trego drops to 5-3 and 0-2 in the MCL.
