Hot-shooting Gorillas too much for the Tigers

HAYS, Kan. - Pittsburg State shot 58-percent including 64-percent in the second half and beat Fort Hays State 79-68 Monday at Gross Coliseum.

The Gorillas (5-8, 1-3 MIAA) closed the game on a 15-5 run after the Tigers (6-6, 0-4 MIAA) had pulled with three on a pair of Devin Davis free throws with 4:26 to play.

The Tigers trailed by four at halftime and took their biggest lead of the game at 48-46 with 12:48 to play on a Calvin Harrington 3-pointer.

A driving layup by Nyjee Wright tied the game 52-52 with 10:25 to play but the Gorillas scored 10 straight over the next two and-a-half minutes to go up 62-52.

Jared Vitztum led the Tigers with 17 points. Wright added 13 and Devin Davis 11.

Jah-Kobe Womack led six Gorillas in double-figures with 18.

16th-ranked FHSU women hold off Pitt State

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State nearly coughed up a 10-point fourth quarter lead but held off the hot-shooting Pittsburg State Gorillas 75-74  Monday night at Gross Coliseum. 

The Gorillas (7-5, 3-1 MIAA) went 9-for-12 from the floor in the fourth quarter and had a chance to take the lead with a little over five seconds to play but Athena Alvarado missed two free throws.

Kasey Kennett was fouled after grabbing the rebound but missed both of her free throws with 2.5 seconds to play but a guarded deep 3-pointer from Tristan Gegg came up short at the horn.

Whitney Randall led five Tigers (11-2, 2-2 MIAA) in double-figures with 15 points. Jaden Hobbs scored 14, Belle Barbiere and Taylor Rolfs both added 10.

Alvarado led the Gorillas with 21.

The Tigers closed the second quarter on a 10-2 run and led by 11 at halftime. The were up 10 after three quarters before the Gorillas opened the fourth on a 10-3 run to pull within three.

PSU was within one on two different occasions in the fourth but failed to take the lead.

FHSU shot 48-percent for the game including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc.
