TMP sweeps Hill City

HAYS – The TMP girls and basketball picked up a doubleheader sweep of the Hill City Ringnecks to open the Mid-Continent League portion of their schedule Friday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

Girls: TMP 52, Hill City 34

The TMP girls finished the first half on a 10-2 run and Adell Riedel knocked down four three-pointers as the Monarchs picked up a 52-34 victory.

After the two teams traded field goals back and forth for a good portion of the first quarter until Adell Riedel hit her first of four three-pointers to give TMP a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. After that TMP would never trail the rest of the way.

In the second quarter Hill City was able to cut the TMP lead to 19-16 on an Alissa Keith three-pointer with just over four minutes to play. But TMP outscored Hill City 10-2 over the final four minutes of the first half to take a 29-18 lead into the break.

TMP extended their lead to 41-29 after three quarters and then outscored Hill City 9-5 in the final quarter on their way to the 52-34 win.

Riedel had a team-high 14 points and Emily Lane added 10 points for TMP.

Hill City’s Brecken Born lead all scorers with 13 points.

TMP improves to 2-2 while Hill City falls to 1-1.

Boys: TMP 68, Hill City 26

The TMP boys hit a season-high 11 three-pointers, five of them from Ryan Stoeklein in his first action of the season, and used a 24-0 second half run on their way to a 68-26 win over Hill City.

A Bryce Seib free throw broke a 4-4 tie and sparked a 10-0 run to end the first and begin the second quarter to give TMP a 15-4 lead. After taking the lead TMP would never look back on their way to the 42-point win.

In the second quarter Hill City cut the TMP lead to eight at 19-11 but the Monarchs responded with a 13-5 run to take a 32-16 lead into the halftime break.

With TMP leading 39-23 the Monarchs caught fire, going on a 24-0 run to end the third quarter and begin the fourth quarter. Ryan Stoeklein started the run with back-to-back threes, followed by a Jackson Schulte three, a third Stoeklein three and then for good measure Schulte capped off the run with a three to put TMP up 58-23.

With the running clock the rest of the way the Monarchs picked up the 68-26 win.

Jackson Schulte finished with a game-high 16 points and lead three in double-figures. Stoeklein added 15 and Carson Jacobs had 13. Jacobs pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Michael Blanks had 13 for Hill City.

The Monarchs improved to 3-1 and 1-0 in the MCL. Hill City drops to 1-1 and 1-1 in the MCL.
