The Hays High Indians boys and girls basketball teams lost their respective third place games on the final day of the Hays City Shootout on Saturday.
Girls
Hays High used runs of 8-0 and 7-0 in the first half to build a 21-13 lead by halftime. Brooke Denning nailed a three in the first quarter to tie the game at five and Carly Lang followed with five straight points for a 10-5 advantage. Hays pushed their advantage to 21-13 at halftime on the back of a 7-0 run that included another Denning three pointer, a basket from Tasiah Nunnery and two Denning free throws.
Hays led by as many as 11 in the second half at 24-13 before Manhattan found their offense. The Manhattan Indians rallied off 13 straight points to regain the lead at 26-24. Nunnery scored two baskets thirty second apart for a 28-26 Hays advantage. Re Green and Brooklyn Schaffer scored four straight points for a 32-30 lead for Hays at the end of the third quarter.
Manhattan seized control of the game with a fourth quarter 9-0 run for a 41-35 advantage. The lead would not exchange hands again. Manhattan made 8-11 fourth quarter free throws to keep Hays at arms length.
Brooke Denning led the way with 15 points. Tasiah Nunnery scored 12. Hays shot 13-14 from the free throw line in their best performance from the stripe of the young season. Hays falls to 1-2 while Manhattan finishes third at 2-1.
Boys
Hays trailed 3-2 early and had five possessions to take the lead but was unable to do so. The two points early in the first quarter would be the only points for the Indians who trailed 10-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Lawrence Free State kept the Indians without a field goal for 8:20 before Hays got back on the board in the second quarter. Hays drew within eight at 15-7 and had the ball twice but could not close the gap. Hays trailed 26-11 at half time and Free State started the third quarter on a 14-0 for for a 40-11 advantage.
Hays did outscore the Firebirds 16-6 in the four quarter for a final of 46-31. A fourth quarter run of 11-0 cut the gap to 17 with 2:50 remaining.
Hays was led by the 10 points of TJ Nunnery.
Hays drops to 1-2. #4-6A Lawrence Free State finishes in third place and is 2-1.
