Hays City Shootout Day Two

Day two of the Hays City Shootout featured the Hays High Indian boys and girls basketball team in the championship semi-finals against Olathe West.


Girls

Olathe West led the entire first half after scoring the first four points of the game. The Indians would get within two at 4-2 but never any closer. The Owls went on a 7-0 to grab their first double digit lead at 13-3. Hays had the ball down 13-6 but did not score on the possession to get closer.


Hays attempted just ten shots in the first half making two. However the Indians deficit sat at 14 at half time thanks to fifteen Olathe West fouls leading to 11 of 18 free throw shooting.


The Indians trailed by 22 in the third quarter and scored back to back field goals to get within 45-27. Hays had two shots slide across the rim on the next possession and Olathe West hit a corner three to re-establish control of the game.


Hays did outscore Olathe West 11-10 in the fourth quarter but fell 60-39. Carly Lang led the Indians with a career high 13 points in the freshman's second career game. Brooklyn Schaffer scored a career high 12 and Tasiah Nunnery added 13.


The Indians fall to 1-1 and will play Manhattan for third place. Olathe West is 2-0 and will play #1 in 5A St. Thomas Aquinas in the championship

Boys

Olathe West used a 7-0 run to start the second quarter to take a lead they never relinquished on their way to the Championship of the Hays City Shootout. Hays and West were tied five times in the first quarter including 14-14 at the end of the first eight minutes.


It took Hays 3:50 to score in the second quarter and when they did the Indians closed the deficit down to three points at 21-18. That would be the closest Hays got rest of the evening.


The Indians trailed eleven in the fourth quarter and cut the lead down to 45-38 but could not score on their next two possession to draw closer. Olathe West never let Hays within seven points rest of the game and wins 57-43.


TJ Nunnery led the Indians with 12 points. Dayln Schwarz scored 10.


Hays will play Lawrence Free State for third place.
