HAYS – Both Olathe West boys and girls basketball teams were able to pick up wins over TMP in the first round of the 37th annual Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout Thursday at Hays High School.
Girls: Olathe West 58, TMP 44
Olathe West outscored the TMP girls 21-9 in the second quarter to build a double-digit lead a lead they would never surrender on their way to the 58-44 win.

TMP opened the game on a 10-2 run thanks to three straight three pointers, two from Adell Riedel and one from Kyleigh Allen. They held onto the lead through the first quarter and Sasha Wasinger’s four straight points helped TMP take a 16-15 lead through one quarter.
In the second quarter the Owls outscored the Monarchs 21-9 and built a 36-25 halftime lead.
TMP was held without a field goal for more than three and a half minutes to start the second half while Olathe West went on a 10-2 run to build a 19-point lead at 50-31. TMP was able to mount a brief comeback with an 11-0 run to end the third and open the fourth quarter that brought the score to 50-42 but they could get no closer in the 58-44 loss.
Adell Riedel lead the Monarchs with 14 points and Sasha Wasinger added 10 points.

The Monarchs will take on Life Prep Friday in the consolation semifinals after they lost to Hays High Thursday.
Boys: Olathe West 72, TMP 61
The Olathe West Owls opened the game on a 20-6 run and outscored TMP 10-0 to start the second half on their way to a 72-61 win over the Monarchs.

Despite trailing by 14 to open the game the Monarchs were able to keep within striking distance in the opening frame and Carson Jacobs had 11 of his career-high 19 points in the quarter as TMP trailead by nine after one, 22-13.
Down 26-13 in the second quarter TMP Jackson Schulte and Hayden Brown combined to scored eight straight points to pull the Monarchs within five at 26-21. But every time the Monarchs made a run and trimmed the deficit the Owls had an answer.
Olathe West big run came at the beginning of the third quarter when the scored 10 straight to build a 46-28 lead. They lead by as many as 19 on two separate occasions in the quarter and lead 52-38 after three.
TMP was able to pull within nine late in the fourth quarter but could get no closer as they open the season with the 72-61 loss.
Game highlights
Jackson Schulte lead TMP with a career-high 23 and Carson Jacobs also had a career-high 19.
TMP will play Life Prep Friday after they lost to Hays High.
