Hays High sweeps Life Prep at home tourney

Hays High hosted opened the basketball season with 37th Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout on Thursday. Teams joining the Indians included Life Prep Academy, Olathe West, Thomas More-Prep, Great Bend, Manhattan, Lawrence Free State boys, St. Thomas Aquinas girls and Millwood, Oklahoma.


The Indians took on Life Prep Academy in the first round.


Girls

Hays 55 - Life Prep 7

Life Prep scored the first two points of the game...Hays scored the next 21 as the Indians ran away from the Fire on Thursday night. The Indians forced 27 first half turnovers, allowed only 15 total shots and led 39-7 at halftime. Hays used runs of 21-0, 10-0 and 8-0 in the half.


Highlights


The clock ran continuous in the second half. The Indians shutout the fire 16-0 during the 16 minutes of game time for a 55-7 win. Hays forced 35 turnovers in the game while committing 13 themselves.

Brooke Denning led all scorers with 14, Tasiah Nunnery added 13 and Isabel Robben scored 11.


Hays improves to 1-0 and plays Olathe West in the semi-finals. Life Prep is now 0-3.


Boys

Hays 92 - Life Prep 42

For the first time in over three decades Hays High had a new coach t the head of the program. Alex Hutchins took over after leading the girls team for one year.

The Indians turned the ball over on their first possession of the game. They then scored the next 15 starting on the next possession. Hays ended the first quarter making nine consecutive shots for a 29-5 lead.


The Indians actually cooled down in the second quarter and shot 74% in the first half and led 53-20 at halftime.


Highlights

Hays pushed the lead to 85-39 after three quarter and won 92-42 after a continuous clock fourth quarter. Hays shot 60.2% for the game making 41 field goals in the victory.


Coach Alex Hutchins

Dylan Ruder grabbed his first career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Carson Keiffer scored a career high 14. Jace Linenberger and Brock Lummus each added career highs of ten points. Overall eight players scored at least seven points. The Indians also maintained a huge advantage on the boards at 47-12.
