Kansas man hospitalized after driver falls asleep

RUSSELL COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 6:30a.m. Thursday in Russell County.


The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 GMC SUV driven by Shaun William Tappendick, 39, Salina, was northbound on Kansas 232 one mile east of Lucas.


 The driver fell asleep and failed to stop at the Kansas 18 intersection. The SUV traveled off the roadway, went airborne and rolled several times coming to rest on its side in a field.


EMS transported a passenger Alec Jon Vause, 27, Salina to the hospital in Ellsworth. Tappendick was not injured.


Both were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.
