HAYS POST

Hays resident and retired Kansas Highway Patrol Lieutenant Al Ackerman has filed for the office of Ellis County Sheriff in 2020.

Ackerman has lived in Hays for more than 15 years and is originally from Hoxie. He is married with three children and six grandchildren.

"I have enjoyed making Ellis County my home and making hundreds of friends and acquaintances throughout the county," Ackerman said in a news release Wednesday.

Ackerman retired from the Kansas Highway Patrol in January 2014 with more than 27 years of law enforcement experience, the final 15 years in a supervisory role.

During his career, Ackerman instructed several classes at the KHP Academy in Salina. He continues to work closely with law enforcement as a Law Enforcement Liaison, a contract position for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Ackerman has accumulated hundreds of training hours, attended numerous leadership classes as well as a wide variety of law enforcement-related training events since his graduation from the KHP Academy.

He has studied criminal justice at Barton County Community College, and holds numerous certificates of recognition for his service with the highway patrol.

Ackerman received the Superintendent's Award for Meritorious Service and the Gold Award for Police Service in 2006 from the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police.

"I'm asking for your support and am excited about the opportunity to lead the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department by adhering to the U.S. Constitution and the Kansas Constitution," Ackerman said.

"I will incorporate life-saving measures through education and enforcement, vigorous investigations, and pursuit and apprehensions of criminals throughout Ellis County into the future with service, professionalism and honor."

Ellis County Undersheriff Scott Braun has also filed to run for sheriff.

The presiding sheriff, Ed Harbin, is not running for reelection.

The candidate filing deadline is June 1, 2020. The general election is Nov. 3, 2020.
