UPDATE: I-70 reopens in Kansas; conditions still icy, snowpacked in areas

UPDATE 6 p.m. Tuesday

The Kansas Department of Transportation has reopened I-70 in both directions from Hays to the Colorado border. U.S. 40 from Oakley to the Colorado border has also been reopened.


Roads may still be snowpacked and icy in areas, and motorists are reminded to use caution when traveling in winter weather conditions.

UPDATED 4:30 p.m. Tuesday

Westbound I-70 has been closed from Hays to the Colorado border because of winter weather conditions in the western part of the state. Both directions are closed from Colby to the Colorado border.


The following routes also remain closed:

  • U.S. 24 from Colby to Levant
  • U.S. 36 from Atwood to the Colorado border
  • U.S. 40 from Oakley to the Colorado border
  • K-27 from Sharon Springs to the Nebraska border
  • K-161 from Bird City to the Nebraska border

Winter weather conditions have caused the closure of several roads in northwest Kansas. Road closures as of 1 p.m. CST include:


  • Westbound I-70 at Goodland
  • Westbound U.S. 36 at St. Francis
  • Westbound U.S. 40 at Oakley
  • K-27 in Sherman County
