H. James “Jim” Brungardt, age 81, of Victoria, Kansas, died Sunday, November 24, 2019, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.
He was born January 17, 1938, in Salina, Kansas, to H. F. “Ham” and Regina F. (VonLintel) Brungardt. He married Gladys M. (Kippes) on April 10, 1961, in Victoria, Kansas.
He and his wife owned and operated Brungardt’s IGA grocery store in Victoria, Kansas, until they retired in the mid-1990s. He remained very active and continued working as a courier for KPC Labs of Hays for 15 years. The Brungardt family started the hardware and grocery store in the late 1890s and served the Victoria community for four generations.
He was a 1955 graduate of Victoria High School, attended Rockhurst College in Kanas City, and was a graduate of Fort Hays State College. He served in the Kansas Air National Guard for three years, and was a member of the Butterfield Antique Car Club for a number of years. He was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis, the Victoria 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and the 4th Degree Assembly Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Brungardt, of the home; one son, Chris Brungardt and wife, Bertha, Victoria, KS; one brother, William “Bill” Brungardt and wife, Marcie, Branson, MO; three grandchildren, James Brungardt and wife, Erin, Hays, KS; Janae Tidwell and husband, Alex, Hays, KS; Janessa Schuetz and husband, Tommy, Hays, KS; six great grandchildren, Kendall, Trey, Myla Brungardt; Makson and Shae Tidwell; Lawson Schuetz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Joyce Ann Brungardt.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 30, 2019, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas, with military honors by the Victoria V.F.W. Post No. 1751. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
A vigil service with the Daughters of Isabella and Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 6:30 P.M. Friday at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas. The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the church.
Visitation is from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Friday at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas, and from 10:00 to 10:45 A.M. Saturday at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary, 412 Main Street, Victoria, Kansas 67671.
The family suggests memorial to The Basilica of St. Fidelis.
