Hays High School senior Levi Hickert was honored with the USD 489 Student Spotlight Award at the school board meeting Monday night.
As a community service project, he chose to update the American Legion's Veterans Memorial Park in Hays.
He replaced unreadable plaques, and painted park benches and a well house.
Hickert worked with several community businesses and the Hays Parks Department to leave Memorial Park a much better place, Superintendent Ron Wilson said.
The driving force for his patriotism is his grandfather who served in the military. Hickert is planning to attend FHSU next year, working toward a degree in mechanical engineering.
Principal Martin Straub also sang Hickert's praises.
"Not only is Levi an exceptional student, he is a good citizen. I know he took advantage of Boy's State at about every opportunity. I think his mom and dad and older sisters have a lot of influence on him.
"You are a good guy, and you really represent what we want at Hays High. We have 1,000 we could present, but tonight we are going to recognize you. Thank you for your patriotism."
