Janessa Miller, age 12, and Matthias Miller, age 8, of Gorham have been named northwest Kansas regional winners in the 2021 Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day poster contest. The contest is sponsored annually by the Kansas Department of Transportation and other traffic safety organizations.

Each received a bicycle from the Kansas Turnpike Authority and a helmet from Safe Kids Kansas.

The aim of the contest is to encourage children to think about traffic safety and present those ideas on posters. A total of 638 children in Kansas, ages 5 to 13, participated this year.

Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day is a nationwide initiative to improve traffic safety and decrease traffic deaths. For more information, visit KDOT’s Put the Brakes on Fatalities website atwww.ksdot.org/events/PutTheBrakesOnFatalitiesDay.
