
Hays Fire Department
At approximately 6:30 a.m. Friday, the Hays Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from a residential home located at 107 W. 20th in Hays.
Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke coming from the kitchen windows and smoke detectors were sounding.
Fire crews immediately made entry into the vacant home and extinguished the fire using a water fire extinguisher.
No injuries were reported. The fire was quickly extinguished and damage was minimal.
The home was vacant at the time and being remodeled.
The cause of the fire was due to spontaneous combustion of wood floor refinishing materials. The materials were stored together created heat causing the fire.
The Hays Fire Department, Ellis County Fire Department Company 5, Ellis County EMS, and Hays Police Department all responded.
The Hays Fire Department would like to remind everyone that when using materials and products that are flammable to please follow the manufacturer recommendations for use and disposal.
